Signatures Youth Dance Showcase: Call for applications

Dance Initiative Greater Manchester

20 November 2018

Signatures 2012- Calling all young dancers - Signatures annual Youth Dance Showcase is back for 2012 and we need YOU!

Signatures Youth Dance Showcase, presented by Dance Initiative Greater Manchester and The Lowry, is back on Saturday 21st January 2012. We are currently searching for new talented dance groups to get involved which includes the opportunity to join in an interactive workshop with award-winning Australian dance artist Shaun Parker on 19th October 2011.

Signatures is a Youth Dance Showcase with a difference! Co-ordinated by Dance Initiative Greater Manchester (DiGM) in partnership with The Lowry this unique event represents a range of dance styles and groups from different backgrounds and cultures, young people from schools to community groups, both boys and girls with ages ranging from 10-22. Signatures truly is a melting pot of talent. It is not a showcase intended for professional groups, but rather a platform for young, dedicated & enthusiastic dancers in our city. It is not a competition, instead participants support and encourage each other throughout.

This year DiGM has proudly drafted in the help of award-winning Australian dancer Shaun Parker. Shaun has collaborated and performed as a dancer and counter-tenor with high profile national and international dance companies over the past 18 years and has made a name for himself as one of Australia’s most innovative choreographers/directors. He has worked nationally and internationally as a dancer and counter-tenor and across music, dance and theatre, appearing with Australian Dance Theatre, Force Majeure, The Song Company, Chunky Move, Sydney Theatre Company and State Theatre Company of South Australia. Internationally, Parker has worked with Sasha Waltz in Berlin, Meredith Monk in New York and Compagnie ALIAS in Switzerland. He has appeared on stage as well as in the feature films Book of Revelation, Mao’s Last Dancer and Moulin Rouge.

Shaun Parker’s premiere UK touring production Happy As Larry comes to The Lowry for 2 performances only on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th October. Happy As Larry is a funny, playful, poignant and intelligent investigation into what makes us happy, featuring an ensemble of nine performers – with nine very distinctive personalities – who individually and collectively explore the elusive nature of happiness. More information can be found at www.thelowry.com

Shaun’s role in the project is to choreograph a motif which acts as the core theme throughout the show. The group leaders/choreographers will be taught this dance work then use this motif as inspiration, creating their own unique and dynamic interpretations all based on the focal choreography.

Performers for Signatures are selected from a host of applications and represent their district in this Greater Manchester wide showcase. Following the application process, the elected groups will be asked to send their choreographers/group leaders to an interactive workshop with Shaun Parker which will take place at the Lowry on Wednesday 19th October 11am-2pm. Here they will watch Shaun perform his motif choreography, which has the theme ‘How does an individual’s happiness affect other people’s happiness?’ and then work with Shaun and his understudy to create new vignettes around the tasks eventually creating their own individual work inspired by the central motif. A refresher workshop is also available to successful applicants with local artist Joseph Lau to re-cap the motif on Saturday 29th October.

We aim to represent a range of dance styles and groups from different backgrounds and cultures. Both school based and community groups are encouraged to apply. If you would like your group to perform visit the DiGM website www.digm.org and download an application form.

Completed application forms must be returned to DiGM by Friday 23rd September 2011 at 5pm
